I had the opportunity to photograph a horse drawn discing and grain treshing event in Shoshone, Idaho at Blue Sage Farm, owned by Laura and Paul Sluder.  Some folks came to help, some came to remittence, some came to watch and eat some grub after the event.  Growing up around a farming operation, I saw a modern way of how fields are worked and harvested.  Watching the way it used to be made me appreciate the conveniences of today's technology, especially as I was a part of it throughout my youth!  This may be a yearly event to bring people together and to "exercise" the horses AND the old equipment!

We snuck in before the weather turned to full fall, before the rain flooded us out, and before the weather dropped to the 50's!  We were blessed with a beautiful day to shoot Zach's senior pictures.  Slaughterhouse Canyon was a perfect setting to place an old "new truck".  I had a great time with Zach's family as they were a huge part of helping me out.  Thank you so much!

The day after my birthday and a day after a 6 mile hike into the backcountry in the mountains, I arrived in Shoshone at 7am on September 13th.  The first annual Lost n Lava Trail ride did not take place in the mountains but in the true Southern Idaho desert.  It was a change of pace and landscape.  I realized immediately I'd forgotten my cowboy hat.

I participated in rodeo in high school and had been on several horses in my years, but it had been about 4 years since I've actually sat in the saddle.  With thousands of dollars in equipment, I was still a bit nervous.  Ol' Ranger and I had only met once before this day.

A good old friend, David Guthrie was along for the ride.  We realized we hadn't seen each other for nearly 12 years!  Needless to say, we had lots to catch up on and memories to relive.    I realized when we stop at The Idaho Mammoth Cave, after showing off some cool camera equipment gadget . . . that the other cool, expensive camera gadget that was supposed to be attached to the first cool camera gadget . . . was gone!!!  David had an even cooler gadget than any of mine though.  A GPS!!!   After a mile backtracking, and me getting more and more quiet, more and more anxious . . . there it lay right there where it unscrewed off the bottom of the camera.  I don't think I've ever loved a GPS more.  Thank you, David.  Good thing my head is screwed on with SUPER, DUPER glue!

I learned that taking photos from a horse that does not want to stand in one spot is challenging, especially when the horse doesn't want to be away from any other horse.  I only got stepped on once but got knocked off my feet a few times.  (You can see the I got a shot of that too, as Ol Ranger is calling for his new buddies on the trail!)  All in all, Ranger found a place in my heart.

While in HS, I rode much of the trail we did the second day of the ride, several times, as it is BLM land directly north of the cattle ranch I grew up on.  It brought back some good memories.  It was great to share the trail this time with some great people, after almost 20 years!!  The landscape hasn't changed, just my age!

Enjoy the photos!  CD's are available with all 326 photos for $30.  Contact Julie @ (208) 756-7550.  Email:  julie@juliependleton.com  View them all at http://pictage.com/1131170

The relationship between Josh Shetler and his old Ford truck started back in his High School Days.  It was the truck that got him to basketball games and probably on a few dates!  He sold it and moved on with his life.  When he spotted it years later, he bought it back, put some elbow grease and long hours into refinishing it to it's current state.  Josh, along with his favorite date, his wife Angela, can be seen cruising the streets of Hailey in the "new" 1961 F100.

It's the time of year people feel the need to find a new year's resolution.  Finding the resolution is always the easy part.  Following through the the resolution is what takes the work.  This year I entered a photo contest with the theme titled "New Year, New You".  I set out on a journey.  Originally, I had something else in mind of what my end result would be visually, but through a series of trials and errors, I not only came across a better composition but also a very real and personal resolution.  By the time I realized I had discovered my true resolution, I was running out of photography time.  I had learned some valuable lessons though.  The most important lesson was not that I came up with some photographs that I personally am satisfied, but that I realized my true resolution, Peace. And Peace be with all of you.

Save that Date!!!  Sherri said "YES!!!" when Stu popped the question right here on the mountain.  Not only did I get to enjoy a wonderful day of skiing with my friends, but I also got to shoot their Save the Date photographs for the wedding.  Two passionate folks . . . passionate about each other, passionate about skiing.

Last years models are just as fun.  It gets me into the Christmas spirit looking back into these recent archives.  Baby has received some new Christmas attire from Grandma.  Be sure to stay tuned for this years new look . . . as an elf!  By the way, kisses under the mistletoe are mandatory!

Jamie specifically didn't want to be posed for her senior portraits.  She wanted shots to be natural.  It made it very fun to shoot, especially in a beautiful setting just north of Ketchum, Idaho as the fall leaves were at their peak.  She chose a simple attire and chose her favorite places for the shots.

  • About

I wear many hats. I am very proud of the beautiful hats I've picked out over the years. Some are very old and "fit like a glove". As ragged as they may be, they are very dear to me. My new hats; some fit naturally, and some are still taking time breaking in. Some hats I've had to put away in the cedar chest for a reminder of the past and to reflect upon at a later date. And you never know when you will pull out that old hat, and find it still fits.

My favorite and most naturally fitting hat these days is the "mom hat". My son is the love of my life and brings me more joy than I ever imagined. My "photographer hat" is runner-up. The passion of stepping behind my camera to capture images that bring joy and inspiration to myself and others was realized finally when I decided to give up my "firefighting hat" after 4 years of smokejumping and almost 12 years in fighting wildland fires in total. Among the other hats I wear, these are the three I'm most proud of.
